Phillips Ties for 9th to Lead Chargers at Fyre Lake Invite

SHERRARD — Clayton Phillips shot 1 over par on the front nine and finished tied for ninth overall as the Carl Sandburg College men's golf team hosted the Fyre Lake Invite on Monday.

Phillips had a 36 on the opening nine holes of the Jack Nicklaus-designed course at Fyre Lake and ended his day with a 10-over 80. He tied for ninth to pace the Chargers, who were fifth as a team with a 335 total on a breezy afternoon. Cooper Theleritis had an 82, Owen Sipka an 86 and Calvin Peterson an 87 to account for Sandburg's other three scores.

Highland's Oskar Akerlind was medalist with a 5-over-75, edging Black Hawk's Luke Lofgren by a stroke.

Highland also won the team title by a shot, finishing with 317 to beat runner-up Illinois Central. Sauk Valley was third at 327 and Black Hawk fourth at 329 in the seven-team event.
