Sandburg women sweep top 3 spots at Sauk Valley Early Season Opener

DIXON — Sandburg swept the top three spots in the women's race, highlighting a solid day for the Chargers cross country teams Saturday at the Sauk Valley Early Season Opener.

The Chargers, competing in their first event of the season, were led in the 2-mile women's race by newcomer Joan Jepngetich, who crossed the line in 13 minutes, 42.5 seconds. She was followed by fellow sophomores Damaris Kimaiyo (13:59.2) and Sharon Yego (14:33.8).

In the men's 3-mile run, freshman Mathias Kiprotich paced Sandburg with a third-place time of 18:02.4 in his Sandburg debut. Titus Kimutai (seventh, 19:00.3) and Collines Chelak (ninth, 20:37.9) also posted top-10 times for the Chargers on the men's side.

Sauk Valley's Tyson Skinner (17:15.6) and Charles Link (17:28.6) were the top two men's finishers.

Highland and Illinois Valley also fielded runners in Saturday's event, which included 12 women's entries and 19 men's entries.

COACH RODNEY BLUE CHARITABLE RUN ON SEPT. 14
Though not a part of the Chargers' official schedule, Sandburg will host the Coach Rodney Blue Charitable Run at 8 a.m. Sept. 14 at the college in memory of the late cross country coach. Registration is $30 (free for Sandburg students) and includes a commemorative T-shirt. Money raised will go toward the Coach Rodney Blue Cross Country Team Fund to support future Sandburg cross country student-athletes.
