Bio

Todd Winkler has built the Carl Sandburg College volleyball program into one of the premier powers in the region since taking over as head coach in 2003. With Winkler at the helm, the Chargers have won three Arrowhead Conference championships (2018, 2019, 2022) and made three NJCAA Division II Championship appearances (2017, 2018, spring 2021) after winning the Region IV tournament title.

Sandburg also has finished as runner-up in the Region IV tournament on six occasions under Winkler (2010, 2011, 2016, 2019, 2021, 2022). In all, the Chargers have played for the Region IV title nine times in Winkler's tenure, including every season since 2016.

Sandburg's Arrowhead Conference title in 2018 was its first in 28 seasons. Their repeat conference championship in 2019 marked the first time the Chargers had won back-to-back Arrowhead titles since winning four straight from 1984-87. Sandburg dropped just one set while winning the 2022 Arrowhead championship with a perfect 8-0 record.

With Winkler at the helm, the Chargers have had three times where a player was voted the Arrowhead Conference's Most Valuable Player: Peyton Bowman (2018, 2019) and Carmyn Baldwin (2022). Bowman also was named Region IV Player of the Year in 2018 and 2019, and she was a Second-Team All-American in 2019.

Winkler also has served as Sandburg's softball coach since 2005. He helped the Chargers to their first conference title in program history in 2019 in addition to Region IV tournament championship appearances in 2012 and 2016.

Winkler grew up outside of Alexis and went to Alexis High School and Western Illinois University. He lives on his family farm just outside of Alexis and has two adult daughters, Kayla and Kelsey.
