
Cannon’s 12 kills lead Chargers in sweep at Spoon River in regular season finale
CANTON — Ayla Cannon's efficient night helped the Sandburg volleyball team cruise to a 25-10, 25-8, 25-17 sweep at Spoon River on Wednesday night to wrap up the regular season.
Cannon finished with a team-high 12 kills while posting a whopping .647 hitting percentage. The freshman had just one error on 17 attacks and recorded two blocks against the Snappers.
Overall, the Chargers (32-10) hit .344 for the match and made just eight errors. Taylor Wagner had nine kills, and Natalie Burden put down seven.
Grace Vyhnanek had assists on 38 of Sandburg's 41 kills in the victory. Libero Madeline Mooney picked up a team-leading 20 digs. Abigail Shaffer had 16 digs, and Wagner contributed 14.
Freshman Olivia Falborg had three blocks (all solo) for the Chargers, and Mooney and Wagner each served two aces.
With the regular season in the books, the Chargers have several players among the statistical leaders in NJCAA Division II. Through Wednesday's action:
- Vyhnanek leads the nation in assists at 1,298 and is ninth in assists per set (9.83).
- Mooney is tops in the country with 960 receptions in addition to ranking third in digs (856) and 12th in digs per set (5.86).
- Wagner's 528 kills this season are second nationally, and Burden is 19th in the country with 400 kills.
- Falborg is fourth among NJCAA Division II players with 69 solo blocks, and her 109 total blocks are 22nd in the nation.
UP NEXT
The Chargers will begin the Region 4 tournament with a quarterfinal match at 6 p.m. Nov. 6. The opponent and location for Sandburg's opening match have yet to be announced. Seeds for the tournament will be decided Sunday. Check sandburgchargers.com next week for details.
