Cannon blasts 14 kills as Chargers get sweep at Illinois Valley
OGLESBY — Ayla Cannon tied a season-high with 14 kills as the Sandburg volleyball team dispatched Illinois Valley 25-10, 25-12, 25-11 on Tuesday night in an Arrowhead Conference matchup.
The sophomore middle hitter recorded a .500 hitting percentage, and the Chargers (11-2, 1-1) hit .435 as a team while extending their winning streak to five matches. Cannon also had 14 kills in Sandburg's Aug. 25 win over Montcalm, and Tuesday was her fifth time this season with double-digit kills.
Taylor Wagner added eight kills and hit .615 on 13 error-free attacks against the Eagles. Natalie Burden chipped in with six kills.
Setter Grace Vyhnanek had 33 assists, and libero Madeline Mooney led the Chargers with 22 digs. Abigail Shaffer also reached double figures in digs, totaling 10.
Mooney had a team-best four of Sandburg's 11 aces on the night. Cannon and Wagner each had two aces, and Cannon and Olivia Falborg each picked up two blocks in the win.
Tuesday's contest was originally scheduled to be played at Sandburg but was moved to IVCC because of a facilities issue. The Chargers, who were scheduled to play at IVCC on Oct. 8, will now host that match.
