Chargers Serve Up Season-High 15 Aces in Conference Win Over Highland

GALESBURG — Carmyn Baldwin served a team-leading five of the Carl Sandburg College volleyball team's season-high 15 aces in a 25-19, 25-14, 18-25, 25-18 win over Highland on Wednesday at John M. Lewis Gymnasium in the Chargers' Arrowhead Conference opener.

The sophomore setter dished out 41 assists and had 13 digs, making her one of five Chargers (6-7, 0-1) to reach double figures in that category.

Gracie Rademacker had a team-best 19 kills on a .291 hitting percentage, put up two blocks, served three aces and tied Addison DeSpain for the team lead with 18 digs in the match.

Sandburg also got a pair of aces from DeSpain, Cristina Heras Marcos and Jasmin McDaniel. McDaniel picked up 17 digs and Heras Marcos finished with a season-best 10.

An 8-2 stretch that featured back-to-back DeSpain aces gave the Chargers a 16-7 lead as they won the opening set.

Sandburg broke a 6-6 tie in the second with a 6-0 run that was capped with kills from Jadyn Swan and Rademacker. The Chargers won the final four points in the set to go up 2-0, getting consecutive aces from Rademacker and a Swan block on set point.

The Cougars led wire-to-wire in the third set to avoid the sweep, but Sandburg pulled away in the fourth, winning five of the last six points to close out the match. Heras Marcos came up with a pancake save that led to a point to make it 22-17, and Rademacker put a kill down the line on match point.
