Minkel shoots career-low round for Chargers at Highland Championship

ROCK ISLAND — Lauren Minkel shot a career-low 84 in the first round as the Sandburg women's golf team competed in the Highland Championship on Sunday and Monday at Highland Springs.

The Chargers, the only two-year program in the field, finished ninth in the 13-team tournament with a two-day total of 699. Sandburg opened with a 356 and improved by 13 shots Monday, scoring a 343.

Minkel's career-best Sunday was the Chargers' low score of the first round. She followed with a 14-over-par 86 on Monday to finish 33rd overall.

Sophomore Ava Hackman shot 85-81, tying her for 22nd and finishing as Sandburg's top player on the leaderboard. Sophomore Kylie Fahnestock also posted a pair of rounds in the 80s, shooting 88-85 and tying for 38th.

As a team, the Chargers finished five shots back of eighth-place Millikin. Host Augustana had rounds of 309 and 312 to win the tournament by 13 shots over North Central.

Augustana's Kelsey O'Connor was medalist with a 36-hole score of 4 over par, beating Lake Forest's Gabrielle Krebs by two. O'Connor shot a 1-under 71 in Sunday's opening round.
