MADISON — Gabbie Vontz's game-high 18 points helped power the Sandburg women's basketball team to a 68-59 win at Madison on Saturday afternoon.
Vontz hit 3 of 7 3-point tries and finished 6 of 13 overall from the field as the Chargers (16-8) won for the fourth time in their last five games. Vontz has scored in double figures in each of Sandburg's victories during that stretch.
The Chargers led 31-25 at halftime and extended their lead to double digits after outscoring the WolfPack 27-19 in the third quarter.
Brook Pieper and Antonia Kisler each added a dozen points for Sandburg in the victory. Pieper also pulled down a team-best nine rebounds and contributed three assists and two steals.
Freshman Lillian Covarrubias had 11 points, five rebounds and three assists for the Chargers, who shot 42 percent (25 of 60) from the field. Freshman Layni Dobbins added six points and six boards off the bench for Sandburg.
Keelyn Zwirschitz had 17 points to lead the WolfPack. Jaida Gaskins added 15 points for Madison.
