Vontz's career-best 22 points lead Chargers in win at Highland

GALESBURG — Gabbie Vontz came up with a career-best 22 points, helping the Sandburg women's basketball team stay unbeaten in the Arrowhead Conference with a 72-61 win at Highland on Thursday night.

The Chargers (14-7) improved to 4-0 through the first half of their conference schedule in their quest for a repeat Arrowhead title.

Vontz totaled her 22 points while going 5 of 14 from the floor, hitting a 3-pointer and sinking 11 of 13 shots from the free-throw line. Her previous career high was 17 points, set Feb. 13 last season against Waubonsee. The sophomore from Oberlin, Kan., also contributed seven rebounds, five assists, four steals and two blocks.

Brook Pieper and Antonia Kisler each finished with double-doubles in the victory for Sandburg. Pieper went 7 of 16 from the field and had 18 points to go with 14 rebounds, four assists and three blocks.

Kisler had 15 points and 10 boards as she earned her third double-double in the last four games. The freshman from Galesburg was 6 of 16 shooting.

The Chargers made just 2 of 23 3-point tries, but Sandburg still managed to shoot 37 percent (24 of 65) overall from the field. The Chargers also made 22 free throws, their most in a game this season.

Sandburg trailed 14-13 after a quarter but took a 34-31 lead into halftime over the host Cougars. The Chargers took a two-point lead into the fourth quarter before outscoring Highland 19-9 in the final period to pull away.
