Chargers blow out Illinois Valley as Covarrubias has stellar night

GALESBURG — Lillian Covarrubias erupted for a season-best 27 points as the Sandburg women's basketball team earned its second straight Arrowhead Conference blowout with a 92-34 victory Thursday at home over Illinois Valley.

The Chargers (12-6, 2-0) scored the game's first 15 points while holding the Eagles off the scoreboard for the opening 7 minutes, 7 seconds and without a field goal for the first 8:55.

Covarrubias, who sat out Tuesday's win at Kishwaukee because of injury, paced four Sandburg players who scored in double figures and was one of three who put up a double-double. The freshman point guard from San Antonio was 8 of 17 from the field, connected on 5 of 11 3-pointers and went 6 of 6 at the free-throw line. She also hauled in 10 rebounds, picked up six steals and dished out two assists.

Covarrubias surpassed her previous season-best for scoring, which had been 16 points on Nov. 20 at Spoon River. Her 10 rebounds marked her first double-digit night on the glass, and her six steals also were a season high.

Antonia Kisler had 15 points and a dozen boards as the freshman from Galesburg picked up her sixth double-double of the season. Kisler also had four of Sandburg's 22 steals in the victory.

Sophomore forward Brook Pieper tallied her 11th double-double in 18 games as she ended up with 12 points and 15 rebounds. Pieper had 10 boards on the defensive glass alone. She was 4 of 8 from the floor, 4 for 4 at the line, blocked two shots, dished out two assists and picked up two steals.

Layni Dobbins, coming off a season-best 12 points Tuesday at Kishwaukee, topped that mark by finishing with 14 points. She made four field goals, including a pair of 3s, and was perfect in free foul shots.

Sandburg led 23-5 after the opening quarter and had a 52-15 advantage at halftime.
