Chargers trounce Spoon River as 4 reach double figures

GALESBURG — Four Sandburg players scored in double figures as the Chargers women's basketball team thumped Spoon River 80-45 on Wednesday evening.

Sophomore Capre Ferguson led the way with 16 points on 6-of-12 shooting. Ferguson had five rebounds (four offensive) and picked up a team-leading five steals.

Sophomore forward Brook Pieper picked up her seventh double-double of the year and fourth in the last five games. Pieper tallied 13 points and 10 rebounds while going 6 of 7 from the field. She also collected four blocks in the victory.

Freshman Tiera Hall matched Pieper's 13 points and went 6 of 7 from the floor. Hall's point total tied her season high, and she pulled in six boards.

Freshman point guard Lillian Covarrubias also hit double figures, scoring 10 points on 4-of-10 shooting. Covarrubias knocked in two of the Chargers' six 3-pointers on the night.

Sandburg (7-5) held the Snappers to just 28 percent shooting (17 of 60), including a 1-for-21 night from 3-point range.

The Chargers took a 27-11 lead after the opening quarter and opened up a 48-22 advantage at halftime. Sandburg led by as many as 42 points in the contest.
