Chargers Breeze by Marshalltown for Opening-Night Victory

GALESBURG — The Carl Sandburg College women's basketball team raced to an early lead and had three players score in double figures in a 77-52 wire-to-wire victory over Marshalltown in the Chargers' season opener Wednesday night at John Lewis Gym.

KEY MOMENTS
• Freshman Brook Pieper scored five quick points as the Chargers (1-0) jumped to a 12-2 start in the opening 3 minutes. Sandburg added a 14-0 run later in the first quarter to push its advantage to 28-8. Sophomore Elly Bentley connected on three mid-range jumpers during the stretch.
• The Chargers led 48-25 at halftime and had their largest lead of the night at 74-38 entering the fourth quarter.

SANDBURG STANDOUT
Pieper finished a rebound away from a double-double in her collegiate debut. The freshman had 15 points and nine rebounds (five offensive) while playing in front of her former teammates at Abingdon-Avon High School. The 6-foot, 1-inch forward was 7 of 16 from the field and had a steal in the victory.
