Chargers Power Past Elgin in Postseason Opener

GALESBURG — The Carl Sandburg College women's basketball team built a double-digit lead after a quarter and extended its season with a 75-57 win over Elgin on Monday at John Lewis Gym in the opening round of the Region IV Division II District B tournament.

Led by 23 points from Elly Bentley and three other players in double figures, the Chargers (12-19) advance to play at unbeaten and top-seeded Morton, the No. 1-ranked team in the country, in the quarterfinals at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Sandburg opened up a 21-10 lead after the opening 10 minutes and led 29-22 at halftime against the Spartans. The Chargers shot an even 50 percent (30 for 60) from the field, including an 8-for-17 night from Bentley, who also had five assists and two steals.

Sandburg also got double-digit efforts from sophomore Natalie Righi (14 points, 6 of 11), freshman Savannah Dominique (11 points, 5 of 8) and Lilly Isenhour (10 points, 4 of 8). Righi and Isenhour fell just shy of recording double-doubles for the second straight game as each finished with a team-best nine rebounds. Dominique added seven boards in the victory.
