Talley, Koech Chargers’ top runners at Bradley Intercollegiate

PEORIA — Up against a strong field largely consisting of four-year programs, the Sandburg men's and women's cross country teams competed in the Bradley Intercollegiate on Friday at Detweiller Park.

Chandler Talley was the top finisher for the men's team, coming across in 38th place in 28 minutes, 3.1 seconds over the 8-kilometer course. Mathias Kiprotich was 61st overall, finishing in 29:58.7. Titus Kimutai and Meshack Kimutai placed 71st and 72nd, respectively. Titus Kimutai was across the line in 32:20.2, while Meshack Kimutai finished in 32:47.1.

Sandburg total 228 points and was ninth as a team in the men's standings, which included NCAAA Division I programs Bradley, Southern Illinois and Maryville. The Chargers finished ahead of NCAA Division III schools Eureka and Blackburn. Host Bradley swept the top five spots, led by Michael Rebello's winning run of 24:50.7.

Linda Koech, making her Sandburg debut, was the Chargers' top runner in the 3-mile women's race. The freshman finished 58th overall in 20:18.8. Damaris Kimaiyo was next across for Sandburg, placing 68th in 21:26.2, and Sharon Yego was 71st in 21:46.4. The Chargers' final two counting scores came from Joan Jepngetich (75th, 21:57.6) and Ascar Jepchirchir (23:38.0).

The Chargers were seventh as a team, scoring 219 points, beating Illinois College, Waubonsee and Blackburn. Bradley had 10 of the top 11 runners, including Nadia Potgieter's first-place time of 16:32.5.
