Chargers Take Top 2 Spots in Both Races at Sauk Valley Invitational
DIXON — The Carl Sandburg College cross country teams had the top two finishers in both the men's and women's races at the Sauk Valley Invitational on Saturday.
Sharon Yego and Damaris Kimaiyo finished 1-2, respectively, in the women's race, while Collines Chelak and Allan Kipruto were the first across the line in the men's race.
Yego won the women's 5-kilometer event in 20 minutes, 43 seconds, edging teammate Kimaiyo by a half-second. Ascar Jepchirchir added a fifth-place finish in 23:04 for Sandburg, which did not field a full team in either race because of injuries and illness.
In the men's 8K, Chelak won with a time of 29:04.1, and Kipruto was just behind as runner-up in 29:04.5. The next closest runner was more than a minute behind Chelak and Kipruto.
Titus Kimutai was ninth for the Chargers in 31:11, and Larry Kamara was 18th in 38:09.
