Sandburg XC Teams Reload After Impressive 2022 Season

GALESBURG — The Carl Sandburg College cross country teams aim for another strong showing in 2023 after sweeping the Arrowhead Conference and Region 4 men's and women's titles a year ago.

The Chargers sent both teams to last year's NJCAA Division II Championships, with the men taking 15th and the women 25th.

Sandburg kicked off the new season with a dual meet at home last weekend against Sauk Valley. The Chargers' first multi-team event of the year is the Western Illinois Invitational on Friday at Spring Lake Park in Macomb.

KEY WOMEN'S NEWCOMERS

  • Damaris Kimaiyo (freshman, Kenya)
    • Placed second in 2-mile women's race in dual against Sauk Valley on Saturday with time of 14:44.42.
  • Sharon Yego (freshman, Kenya)
    • Was fourth in Sauk Valley dual in 15:11.96.
  • Ascar Jepchirchir (freshman, Kenya)
    • Placed fifth in dual race against Sauk Valley in 16:49.89.

KEY MEN'S NEWCOMERS

  • Allan Kipruto (sophomore, Kenya)
    • Won men's 5-kilometer race in last week's dual against Sauk Valley with a time of 17:11.65.
  • Collines Chelak (freshman, Kenya)
    • Placed second in Sauk Valley dual in 17:31.05.
  • Meshack Kimutai (freshman, Kenya)
    • Finished third in Sauk Valley dual at 17:32.79.

MEETS TO WATCH

  • Western Illinois Invitational, Sept. 1 at Spring Lake Park in Macomb
  • Bradley Intercollegiate, Sept. 15 at Detweiller Park in Peoria
  • Heartland Invite, Sept. 29 at Maxwell Park in Normal
