Kiprop 2nd-Team All-American for Chargers at XC Nationals; Women Take 25th

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Sophomore Emmanuel Kiprop earned Second-Team All-America honors after finishing eighth overall to highlight the Carl Sandburg College cross country teams' showing at the NJCAA Division II Championships on Saturday.

Led by Kiprop, the Chargers' men's squad finished 15th as a team, while the women's team was 25th.

Kiprop, who finished 16th at nationals as a freshman, completed the 8-kilometer course at Apalachee Regional Park in 26 minutes, 21.6 seconds. His showing marked the second straight year the Chargers have had an All-American runner.

Calton Kibet, a First-Team All-American last year and the two-time reigning Region IV champion, placed 62nd overall for Sandburg in 28:27.7. Nick Janson was 117th in 30:00.6.

Sandburg totaled 442 points in the meet, 27 behind 14th-place Florida State College Jacksonville. Paradise Valley won the national title with 68 points, and Yotuel Garcia of Mesa was the individual champion with a time of 25:25.4.

In the women's 5K, Babra Viola Jepkirui led the Region IV champion Chargers in 51st place with a time of 20:58.2. Faith Kiprop was next across the line for Sandburg at 139th place in 23:15.6.

The Chargers finished with 633 points, which was 16 behind Gadsden State for 24th place. Lansing finished with 57 points to edge Mesa by one for the national title. Coconino's Hayley Burns was the individual national champ with a time of 18:22.8.
