Kiprop, Kibet, Jepkirui Lead Chargers at Heartland Invite

NORMAL — Emmanuel Kiprop and Calton Kibet posted top-five finishes on the men's side and Babra Viola Jepkirui added a top-10 finish in the women's race for the Carl Sandburg College cross country teams at the Heartland Invite on Friday at Maxwell Park.

Kiprop crossed third in the men's 8-kilometer run with a time of 25:46.68, coming in 7 seconds behind Balin Doud and 5 seconds back of Brian Nevills, both of Heartland. Kibet was fifth overall with a time of 26:14.78. Sandburg's Nick Janson rounded out the top 20 runners in 28:21.87.

The Chargers, ranked 10th in the most recent US Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association poll, finished third with 66 points, just back behind runner-up Joliet. Kaskaskia was fourth with 98 points. Heartland, ranked third nationally on the men's side, had all five of its scorers in the top seven to win with 20 points.

Jepkirui paced the Chargers in the women's 5K with a 10th-place time of 21:39.01. Faith Kiprop was 25th for Sandburg in 23:52.61 as the Chargers finished fourth with 100 points.

Heartland, No. 4 in the women's national rankings, swept the top five spots. Joliet was second with 58 points, and Kaskaskia, ranked 18th in NJCAA Division II, was third with 77 points.
