Kiprop’s 3rd Career Victory Leads Chargers at Fighting Bee Invite

BETTENDORF, Iowa — Sophomore Emmanuel Kiprop was the individual champ in the 8-kilometer men's race as both Carl Sandburg College cross country teams finished fourth at the Fighting Bee Invite hosted by St. Ambrose on Saturday at Crow Creek Park.

Kiprop completed the course in 26:20 to win by 42 seconds over Ryan Mitchell of Mount Mercy for his third career victory. Teammate Calton Kibet was third for the Chargers in 27:26 as Sandburg's men's team placed 90 points in the seven-team event.

Mount Mercy won with 43 points. The Chargers placed ahead of Clarke (98), Iowa Wesleyan (178) and Scott (180), which was the only other two-year college in the race.

Babra Viola Jepkirui was the Chargers' first finisher in the 5K women's race, taking 14th in 22:10. Faith Kiprop was 32nd in 24:26, and freshman Dayanna Ortiz placed 35th in 24:54. Sandburg's final two scores came from Mary Njuguna (26:00) and Mercy Jerono (26:05), who finished 38th and 39th, respectively.

Mount Mercy had five finishers among the top seven to win the event. Sandburg finished ahead of Emmaus Bible and Iowa Wesleyan in the six-team women's division.
