GALESBURG — A fantastic season for the Sandburg men's soccer team ended in frustrating fashion Thursday as the No. 19 Chargers were upset 4-0 by Triton at Kleine Field in the first round of the Region 4 Division II tournament.
With a frigid wind blowing out of the west all afternoon, scoring chances were hard to come by for both teams. The match was scoreless until the late stages of the first half.
In the 33rd minute, Chargers (11-3-3) keeper Lucas Sa de Albuquerque Maranhao approached the edge of the box to go after the ball with a Trojans (11-5-2) player in the area. Maranhao collected the ball inside the box but was whistled for a penalty and given a yellow card for contact with the Triton player. Oliver Salgado converted the penalty and gave 12th-seeded Triton a 1-0 lead into halftime.
The Trojans doubled their lead in the 48th minute as Emir Heto played a soft shot that trickled by Maranhao and across the goal line. Triton added on with goals in the 52nd minute from Wilson Espino and Heto's second of the day in the 83rd minute.
The fifth-seeded Chargers were limited to six shots on goal in the contest. The loss snapped a six-game win streak and eight-game unbeaten streak for Sandburg. Thursday's game marked just the third time this season the Chargers had been kept off the scoreboard.
