SUGAR GROVE — The Sandburg men's soccer team struck for a pair of quick second-half goals and held on to beat Waubonsee 2-1 in a Region 4 match Saturday afternoon.
With the contest scoreless into the second half, the Chargers (9-2-3) broke through when Rodrigo De la Fuente scored in the 63rd minute off an assist from Gabriel Barros Lima.
Sandburg doubled its lead a short while later as De la Fuente fed Jaime Martin Caballero for a goal in the 65th minute.
The Chiefs got on the board in the 70th minute as Sandburg had an own goal, but the Chargers were able to keep Waubonsee from getting the equalizer.
Sandburg keeper Mario Gonzalez Luena earned the win in net, stopping seven of eight shots on goal.
Waubonsee's goal was the first conceded by the Chargers since the 35th minute Sept. 22 against Heartland. Sandburg had gone 395 minutes after that before allowing another score.
