Sandburg men’s soccer knocks off No. 10 Prairie State 3-1

GALESBURG — The Sandburg men's soccer team bounced back from consecutive losses in impressive fashion Thursday afternoon, defeating 10th-ranked Prairie State 3-1 at Kleine Field.

The Chargers (5-2-2), coming off their first two losses of the season, took an early lead against the Pioneers and never looked back.

Sandburg got on the board in the third minute as keeper Lucas Sa de Albuquerque Maranhao got in on the offense. After stopping a Prairie State free kick, Maranhao sent a long ball past midfield toward Enrico Augusto Rola. Rola beat two defenders to the ball, made a move to his left and hit a shot back toward the right post for a 1-0 lead.

Jaime Martin Caballero gave the Chargers a 2-0 advantage in the 28th minute as he stole the ball from about 25 yards out and found himself one-on-one with the Pioneers' keeper. Caballero poked a shot from the left side inside the right part of the goal to double Sandburg's lead going into halftime.

The Chargers added to their lead in the 58th minute when the Prairie State keeper was whistled for a penalty. Alberto Fernandez Do Carmo converted the PK to put Sandburg up 3-0.

The Pioneers got on the board in the 76th minute but couldn't get another past Maranhao, who stopped 11 of 12 shots in addition to his assist. His best stop came in the 15th minute as he made a diving save on a header following a shot that hit the crossbar. Maranhao's 11 saves matched the career-high he set Friday against Southeastern.

The Pioneers had two goals that were waved off, with one coming on a foul during a free kick and the other because of an offside call.
