Chargers Blank Kankakee, Head Into Postseason on 4-Game Streak

GALESBURG — The Carl Sandburg College men's soccer team closed out its regular season with a 2-0 Region 4 victory over Kankakee on Tuesday afternoon at Kleine Field.

The Chargers (10-3-2 overall, 7-2-1 Region 4), who were among those receiving votes in this week's NJCAA Division II rankings, have won four in a row entering next week's Region 4 tournament. The bracket for the 10-team tournament will be decided Monday.

Vinicios Goncalves Sartorello opened the scoring in the eighth minute when Matteo Rissato Prado fed him on a run down the left side. Sartorello's shot from about 15 yards got under the oncoming Kankakee keeper for a 1-0 lead.

It stayed that way until the 87th minute when a goal from Gabriel Barros Lima put the game away. Felipe Endo Dos Santos sent a pass from midfield to Lima near the left sideline. He spun past a Cavaliers defender and moved into the box, where his shot from the left corner bounced, deflected off the keeper and rolled inside the right post for a key insurance goal.

Lucas Maranhao stopped all six Kankakee shots on goal in keeping a clean sheet in net for the Chargers. The clean sheet was the seventh of the season for Sandburg.
