Chargers win team title, Hoosen places 2nd at Sauk Spring Invite

DEER GROVE — The Sandburg men's golf team shot a season-low 294 as it won the Sauk Spring Invite on Friday at Deer Valley.

All four scorers for the Chargers shot 75 or better in the victory. The low round of the day for Sandburg came from Kenny Hoosen, who finished with a 1-under-par 71 and was runner-up for the tournament.

Hoosen knocked in a pair of eagles on the day, carding 3s at the par-5 eighth and 16th holes. He also birdied the par-5 10th as he played the course's par-5 holes in 5 under. The freshman from East Peoria finished a shot back of Sauk Valley's Brendan Pillion for medalist honors. Hoosen shot a 1-under 35 on the opening nine and was even on the back.

Colby Robertson and Tanner Wake tied for sixth for Sandburg with a pair of 2-over 74s. Robertson made birdie on the par-4 11th and added 14 pars in his round. Wake notched biridies on the eighth, the par-4 11th and par-4 14th.

Logan Beers gave the Chargers four players in the top 10 of the 64-player field as he came in with a 3-over 75. Beers made birdies at the par-4 first and fifth holes.

Sandburg's 294 total was just 6 over par and was six shots ahead of Illinois Valley and Black Hawk (Gold), which tied for second. The Chargers' round was three shots better than their previous season low of 297 on Sept. 25 in the Eureka Tri at Metamora Fields. That event marked Sandburg's other team victory this season.
