Sandburg Men’s Golf Set to Start Fall Season

GALESBURG — The Carl Sandburg College men's golf team takes its first swings of the fall season at the Duane Chanay Invite on Thursday and Friday at Pinnacle Country Club in Milan.

The Chargers' fall schedule features five events, including hosting the Charger Classic on Sept. 14 at Lake Bracken Country Club.

Sandburg's men's golf program looks to continue a remarkable run of success, as it has advanced an individual or qualified as a team to the national tournament 11 years in a row and 15 times in the last 16 seasons.

KEY RETURNERS
 Tyler Picken (sophomore, Pekin)

  • Posted a pair of top-five finishes last season, tying for fourth at both the Kougar Invite and Sauk Valley Challenge.
  • Chargers coach Ryan Twaddle: "We fully expect Tyler to compete near the top of the leaderboard every tournament. Tyler is great off the tee and has a great short game."

Kyle Shaw (sophomore, Galesburg)

  • Earned a spot on the All-Arrowhead Conference team as a freshman, tying for 12th.
  • Twaddle: "Kyle has played well so far in practice, and we expect to see him in the mid-70s most of the season."

NOTABLE NEWCOMER
 Logan Beers (freshman, Bethel, Conn.)

  • Twaddle: "Logan has put up some very impressive numbers in practice so far. We are very excited about his potential this year."

WHAT ARE YOUR EXPECTATIONS FOR THIS TEAM THIS SEASON?
 Twaddle: "We expect this team to compete for a region championship."

TOURNAMENT TO WATCH
 Arrowhead Conference Championship, Oct. 2-3 at PrairieView Golf Club in Byron

SCHEDULE SHAKEUP
In a change from past years, the Chargers' national qualifying tournament will take place during the spring season instead of the fall. The Region 4 championship will be held April 28-30 at PrairieView.

THIS WILL BE A SUCCESSFUL SEASON IF …
 Twaddle: "We can control our golf ball. We need to limit penalty shots and be mentally tough during rounds."
