Sandburg Men’s Golfer Phillips Ties for 58th at National Tournament

PLYMOUTH, Ind. — Sophomore Clayton Phillips closed his Carl Sandburg College men's golf career by tying for 58th at the NJCAA Division II Championship at Swan Lake Resort.

Phillips, making his second straight appearance at nationals, opened the tournament with a 3-over-par 75 on Tuesday, followed by rounds of 77, 79 and 77 for a 308 total. Phillips, who tied for 43rd at nationals a year ago, made 11 birdies during the tournament, including one on the 72nd hole Friday.

Phillips ended his career as a two-time national qualifier, four-time medalist and two-time member of the All-Region IV and All-Arrowhead Conference teams. His showing at nationals marked the 11th year in a row and 15th time in the last 16 seasons Sandburg has been represented at nationals.

Glendale's Warner Beach birdied the final hole of the tournament and shot a 3-under 69 in the final round to win the individual national title by a stroke over South Mountain's Damon Vilkauskas. Beach finished at 6 under for the tournament, which had a field of 119 players.

Kirkwood won the team championship with a four-round score of 16 over to win by eight shots over Parkland.
