Chargers on All-Arrowhead Conference Team

Sandburg Men’s Golf Takes 2nd in Conference, Puts 5 on on All-Arrowhead Team

GALESBURG — Clayton Phillips led five Carl Sandburg College men's golfers who earned spots on the All-Arrowhead Conference Team at the Arrowhead Conference Tournament on Monday and Tuesday at Lake Bracken.

The tournament-host Chargers placed second as a team and matched champion Highland for the most players on the all-conference team, which went to the top 15 finishers.

Phillips tied for third after finishing the 54-hole tournament with a 219 total. He shot rounds of 73 and 75 Tuesday, followed by a 1-under-par 71 on Tuesday while earning an all-conference spot for the second year in a row.

Sophomore Cooper Theleritis also made it back-to-back seasons on the All-Arrowhead team by placing fifth. Theleritis shot 75-76-74 to finish at 225 for the tournament.

Calvin Peterson tied for 10th at 244 by shooting 82-85-77. Owen Sipka (playing as an individual) and Kyle Shaw were part of a four-way tie for 12th to round out the all-conference team. Shaw shot 86-79-80 for his three rounds, while Sipka opened with rounds of 86 and 81 before a closing 78.

Shaw chipped in for eagle on his final hole to clinch his all-conference spot and push the Chargers into second place ahead of Black Hawk. Sandburg entered the final round a stroke behind the Braves after starting with rounds of 315 and 310 on Monday. But the Chargers' 303 on Tuesday was the best of any team, and their three-round score of 928 was two better than Black Hawk.

Highland shot 303-292-305 for a total of 901. The Cougars' Riku Mariyama was the individual Arrowhead champion with a 4-under-par total of 212 (72-69-71). He finished five shots ahead of teammate Kotaro Kawasaki and seven ahead of Phillips and Luke Lofgren from Black Hawk.

Phillips will compete as an individual at the NJCAA Division II Men's Golf Championship from May 23-26 at Swan Lake in Plymouth, Ind. This marks the 11th year in a row and 15th time in the last 16 seasons the Chargers will be represented at nationals.
