Chargers Win Sauk Valley Challenge Title as Phillips Collects 3rd Career Victory

DEER GROVE — The Carl Sandburg College men's golf team had four players finish in the top five — including medalist Clayton Phillips — as it won the Sauk Valley Challenge on Wednesday at Deer Valley.

Phillips came back from a two-stroke deficit after the opening round to earn his third career victory. The sophomore followed up a first-round 75 with a 79 at Deer Park, giving him a two-shot win over teammate Cooper Theleritis and Jeremy Ott of ICC.

The Chargers shot a 306 to lead by three strokes following Monday's opening round at WeaverRidge. After Tuesday's second round at Lake Bracken was canceled because of unplayable conditions, the Chargers posted a 318 in Wednesday's final round to win the tournament. Sandburg finished 13 shots ahead of runner-up Illinois Central.

Theleritis had rounds of 76 and 80, and freshmen Tyler Picken and Owen Sipka tied for fourth at 157 for the tournament. Picken shot 78-79, while Sipka carded rounds of 77 and 80.

Also competing for Sandburg were Calvin Peterson (15th place, 168), Kyle Shaw (17th, 170) and David Hise (21st, 185).
