Phillips Fires 2-Over 74 to Lead Chargers at IW Tiger Classic

BURLINGTON, Iowa — Sophomore Clayton Phillips tied for fifth overall and the Carl Sandburg College men's golf team took fifth as a team at the IW Tiger Classic on Thursday at Burlington Golf Club.

Phillips shot a 2-over-par 74 that included an even-par 36 on the back nine to finish in a three-way tie for fifth in the 65-player field. The sophomore matched his season low and was just two shots back of co-medalists Jack Wilkie of Knox and Corbin Borelli of Mount Mercy. Phillips' round included birdies on the par-5 second, par-3 third and par-3 17th.

The Chargers, one of only two community colleges in the field, shot 320 to take fifth in the 11-team event.

Tyler Picken posted a top-20 finish for Sandburg, tying for 19th with a 7-over 79. Picken's round included back-to-back birdies on the first and second holes. Kyle Shaw (83) and Calvin Peterson (84) contributed the Chargers' other two scores toward their total.

Knox's B team finished with a 298 to win the tournament by two shots over Mount Mercy's B team.
