Phillips Earns 2nd Career Win as Chargers Take Sandburg Invite Title

GALESBURG — Clayton Phillips won medalist honors and the Carl Sandburg College men's golf team also took first place as the Chargers opened their season by hosting the Sandburg Invite on Thursday at Bunker Links.

Phillips, a national qualifier last year, fired a 3-over-par 74 to begin his sophomore campaign. Phillips' round included an even-par 35 on the back nine as he won by two strokes over Sauk Valley's Axel Lovgren for his second career victory. He was also medalist at last year's Arrowhead Conference meet at Highland.

Tyler Picken joined Phillips with a round in the 70s by carding a 78. Picken had a 36 on the back to close out his round. The Chargers' other two scorers were sophomores Cooper Theleritis and Owen Sipka, who both posted an 81. Kyle Shaw, playing as an individual for the Chargers, shot 78 to tie for third place overall.

Sandburg's 314 total beat runner-up Sauk Valley by nine strokes. Illinois Valley was third at 332 and Kishwaukee fourth at 379.
