
Wires turns in season-high 20, but WolfPack end Chargers’ season in Region 4 quarterfinals
GALESBURG — Four Chargers scored in double figures, but the Sandburg men's basketball team saw its season end with a 103-84 loss at Madison on Thursday in the quarterfinals of the Region 4 Division II District B tournament.
The 11th-seeded Chargers (18-13) finished the contest shooting 46 percent from the field (28 of 61) and 42 percent from 3-point range (13 of 31) but were unable to keep pace with the No. 6 seed WolfPack, who shot 63 percent overall (39 for 62) and 62 percent from long distance (13 of 21).
Tyler Heffren had 22 points on 7-of-14 shooting to lead Sandburg. The freshman from Eureka connected on 6 of 11 shots from beyond the arc and had five rebounds. It was Heffren's third outing this season of 20-plus points.
Freshman guard Ralph Wires turned in a season-high 20 points while going 7 of 11 from the field, including 4 for 5 from 3-point land. The outing capped a strong finish to the season for Wires, who scored in double figures in four of the Chargers' last five games. Thursday marked the third straight game in which Wires matched or exceeded his season-best in scoring. He had 15 points in Saturday's win over Olive-Harvey.
Sophomore Ethan Price ended his Chargers career by putting up a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds. The forward from Fulton hit 6 of 7 foul shots and had five assists.
Sophomore guard Logan Sluder also reached double figures, scoring 12 points while going 5 of 6 at the free-throw line in his final game with Sandburg.
JP Pleasant's game-high 23 points paced five Madison players in double figures. The WolfPack advance to face No. 3 South Suburban in Saturday's semifinals at Rock Valley.
