Wires collects 14 points, but Chargers fall on road to Scots

MONMOUTH — Ralph Wires had his best scoring night as a Charger, but the Sandburg men's basketball team was handed a 69-67 loss at Monmouth JV on Monday night.

Wires finished with a team-leading 14 points and bested his previous season-high of 13, set Nov. 22 at Waubonsee. The freshman point guard from Quincy was 4 of 8 from the field, hit 1 of 2 3-point tries and was 5 of 6 from the foul line. Wires also had four rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals.

No other Chargers player reached double figures as Sandburg (9-7) was limited to just 33 percent shooting. The Chargers were 22 of 67 from the floor and had an unusually cold night from beyond the arc, going 4 of 31. Sandburg came into the contest ranked sixth nationally in total 3s made, averaging 10 per game and shooting 33 percent from long range.

Logan Sluder tallied nine points for Sandburg, and Ethan Price and seven points to go with his team-best nine rebounds. Price also matched Sluder and Matt Bockman for the team lead with three steals.

The Chargers outscored the Fighting Scots 36-29 in the second half but were unable to complete the comeback victory after trailing 40-31 at the break.
