Heffren tallies 6 3s, season-high 28 points in Chargers’ win at Elgin
ELGIN — Tyler Heffren went off for six 3-pointers and a season-high 28 points as the Sandburg men's basketball team kicked off 2025 with an 87-78 win at Elgin on Friday.
Heffren, a freshman from Eureka, connected on 6 of 9 shots from beyond the arc and finished 11 of 15 overall from the field. His game-leading 28 points surpassed his previous season-best of 18, set Nov. 16 against Madison.
Heffren's big day helped the Chargers (9-6) outscore the Spartans 45-35 in the second half.
Sophomore Logan Sluder tallied 19 points on 7-of-12 shooting, and sophomore Ethan Price collected a double-double with 12 points and a game-best 11 rebounds.
The Chargers also got 13 points off the bench from freshman Matt Bockman. It marked Bockman's third double-digit outing in the last four contests.
Outside of Heffren, Sandburg hit just 1 of 16 3-point tries, but the Chargers still shot 54 percent overall from the floor (33 of 61) and were 16 for 20 at the free-throw line.
Elgin got 27 points from Xavior Gonzales and 23 from Tristan Walton in the loss. Manny Brown added 15 points and eight boards for the Spartans.
