Heffren’s 3s in OT help Chargers soar past Spoon River

GALESBURG — Tyler Heffren heated up from long range in overtime, helping the Sandburg men's basketball team outlast Spoon River 83-80 in OT on Wednesday night.

The Chargers (7-5) trailed by eight in the second half, but Ethan Price's pair of free throws with 20 seconds left in regulation sent to the game to overtime.

Heffren scored nine of Sandburg's 16 points in the extra period as he went 3 for 3 from 3-point range, with each shot coming from the right corner. The freshman from Eureka hit his first in OT off a Davante Bradford assist to give the Chargers a 72-67 advantage.

Down 75-74, Bradford collected a steal, and Ralph Wires hit Heffren for a go-ahead trey with 1:04 to go. That proved to be the last of 22 lead changes in a game that also featured eight ties.

Heffren added a third 3-pointer in OT with :35 to play when Price fed him off an inbounds pass to make it 80-75. Heffren totaled 12 points in the victory, going 4 of 9 from long distance.

Bradford had a team-highs of 19 points and eight rebounds on 7-of-9 shooting before he fouled out in overtime. The freshman forward also had three assists and two steals.

Logan Sluder had 18 points and four assists for the Chargers, and Price scored 13, including a 5-for-5 night at the free-throw line. Freshman Matt Bockman knocked down a pair of 3s and finished with a season-best 10 points for Sandburg.

The Chargers hit 18 of 20 foul shots and committed just 10 turnovers to the Snappers' 25.
