Derry, Babers Have Big Nights, but Chargers Bumped From Region 4 Tourney by Scots

CRYSTAL LAKE — Koen Derry and Jeremiah Babers each went for 20-plus points, but the Carl Sandburg College men's basketball team lost 80-71 at McHenry County on Thursday night in the quarterfinals of the Region 4 Division II District A tournament.

The Chargers end their season with a 14-17 overall record. Fourth-seeded McHenry County advances to face Waubonsee in the semifinals Saturday at Rock Valley.

Derry finished with a career-high 26 points to lead the Chargers. He scored 14 of his points in the second half. The previous career-best for the sophomore from Galesburg was 18 points Feb. 17 against Morton. Derry reached double figures in each of Sandburg's final seven games, averaging 17.1 points per contest during the stretch.

Babers totaled 23 points against the Scots. The sophomore point guard from Galesburg made eight field goals — including a 3-pointer — and was 6 of 9 from the free-throw line. The outing was Babers' biggest scoring night since he put up 27 on Dec. 9 at Waubonsee.

Sandburg trailed 35-30 at halftime, and the Scots (23-8) held off the Chargers in the second half, outscoring them 45-41.

McHenry County had four players reach double figures, led by a game-high 33 points from Quinton McCullough.
