Grose, Caves Each Go for 13, but Chargers Can’t Maintain Late Lead vs. Cougars

GALESBURG — The Carl Sandburg College men's basketball team had a lead in the closing minutes, but Highland put together a late run to defeat the Chargers 73-66 on Tuesday in an Arrowhead Conference contest at John Lewis Gym.

KEY MOMENTS
• The Chargers (5-12, 0-2) trailed 20-7 before rattling off 15 of the next 18 points, starting with a 13-0 run. Marckell Longstreet kicked off the stretch with a three-point play followed by a layup off an assist from Tyrese Grose. Highland answered the Chargers' rally with an 11-0 run to end the half and go into the break ahead 34-22.
• Down 11 in the second half, Sandburg put together a 12-3 burst that was bookended by three-point plays from Roee Dinnar and Hunter Caves to get within 41-39. A turnaround shot by Grose gave the Chargers a 46-45 lead with 13:09 to go.
Connor Barnett's three-point play with 4:06 to go put Sandburg up 61-59, and he hit a turnaround jumper with 2:55 left for a 63-62 advantage. Highland, though, regained the lead for good on a Markwan Adams 3-pointer with 2:16 left. The kicked off the Cougars scoring 11 of the contest's final 14 points, with Sandburg's only field goal in that stretch coming on Dinnar's layup at the buzzer.

SANDBURG STANDOUT
Grose had 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting to tie Caves for the team lead in scoring. The freshman forward had three rebounds, three assists, three steals and a pair of blocks.

STINGY SANDBURG
Sandburg held Highland to 73 points, its lowest output of the season against a team outside of Division I. The Cougars came into the game averaging 97 points per contest against foes outside of their division. Highland's previous low in scoring this season against a non-DI school was 84 points against Olive-Harvey.
