Bentley Scores 21, but Chargers’ Rally Falls Short Against Trojans
GALESBURG — The Carl Sandburg College women's basketball team trimmed a big deficit to single digits but was unable to complete the comeback in a 77-60 loss to Triton on Thursday at John Lewis Gym.
KEY MOMENTS
• The visiting Trojans came out on fire, grabbing a 19-5 lead in the first 7:05 of the game and holding a 26-10 advantage after the first quarter.
• Triton took its largest lead of the night at 53-29 early in the third quarter before the Chargers (14-6) began to rally. A Kelci Shelton bucket began a 14-0 run by Sandburg that cut Triton's lead to 53-43 before the midway point of the third. Shelton fed Capre Ferguson for a 3-pointer with 2:55 to play in the third to get within seven at 55-48, but that was as close as the Chargers would get the rest of the night.
• Elly Bentley's mid-range jumper with 5:40 to go made it 62-54, but Triton scored 15 of the final 21 points in the contest.
SANDBURG STANDOUT
Bentley scored a team-high 21 points, finishing as the only Sandburg player in double figures. The sophomore guard was 8 of 14 from the field, went 5 for 6 from the foul line, had three assists and picked up two steals. It marked her ninth 20-point effort of the season.
