Sandburg Men’s Soccer Hands No. 20 Illinois Valley First Region Loss

GALESBURG — The Carl Sandburg College men's soccer team picked up a key Region 4 victory Saturday afternoon, handing No. 20 Illinois Valley its first region loss 2-1 at Knox College's Jorge Prats Field.

Rodrigo De la Fuente scored the first goal and assisted on the other for the Chargers, who have one regular season game remaining.

De la Fuente got Sandburg (9-3-2 overall, 6-2-1 Region 4) on the board in the 18th minute as he took a pass from Brais Gonzalez about 30 yards from the goal, worked his way into the box through three defenders and chipped a shot past the Eagles (11-3-1, 10-1-1) keeper and inside the right post.

Sandburg doubled its lead in the 55th minute as De la Fuente made a run down the right side on a quick attack. His centering pass found Saul Etienne, whose initial attempt was broken up by the Illinois Valley keeper, but Etienne got to the loose ball and put it away for a 2-0 lead.

The Eagles got on the board in the 77th minute, but the Chargers' back line didn't yield the equalizer in a game Sandburg controlled throughout.

Tian Poyo Capilla stopped three of four IVCC shots on net in the victory. The Chargers had 11 shots on goal out of their 13 attempts.
